CUADRAX is a wall light from the Spanish brand Mantra built around a single motif: a solid cube of clear optical glass with four oval hollows ground into it. The glass is thick and heavy, so it refracts like a prism – with the lamp lit, the edges of the cube glow separately from its core and a soft pattern of reflections appears on the wall.
Construction
The cube is held by a metal arm in a warm antique-brass finish, mounted on a rectangular wall plate. The complete fitting is 15.5 cm tall, 13 cm deep and 8.5 cm wide – a wall light that accents a piece of wall rather than occupying it. It weighs 0.73 kg.
The light
The fitting takes one G9 lamp of 5 W. That compact capsule base disappears inside the cube, so all you see is glowing glass. The fitting is not dimmable. Because the glass is clear, a warm-toned lamp suits it – cool light in glass this thick can read as harsh.
Where it works
IP20 places it in dry interiors. Natural spots are a hallway, either side of a bed, a stairwell wall or a living room – anywhere decorative light is wanted rather than general room lighting. Several units at even spacing create a rhythm of glass points along a wall.
