Bray is a Hinkley swing-arm wall light: a black conical shade on a slim, curved arm that rises from a rectangular wall plate. The shade swivels on a joint, and the on/off switch is hidden in the fitting itself, so you can turn it on without reaching for the wall switch. It is distributed in Poland by Elstead Lighting.
Dimensions and where to mount it
The light is 42.5 cm high and 14 cm wide, and the shade projects 47 cm from the wall. That projection decides where it goes: compare it with the distance from the wall to the spot you want lit — the pillow beside the bed, the back of an armchair or the top of a desk. It weighs 1.88 kg and screws to the wall through its mounting plate.
Bulb and light
There is one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is supplied, so you choose the brightness and colour — for reading, warm white at 2700–3000 K is the usual choice, and an LED bulb of about 800 lm is as bright as an old 60 W bulb. The fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs: dimming needs such a bulb and a dimmer switch.
The shade is black outside and white inside, and light leaves only through its lower opening. Bray therefore lights a chosen spot rather than the whole room. It is a Class I fitting, which must be connected to earth, and it is for indoor use.
Where it fits
The swivelling shade and long reach make Bray a reading light: beside the bed, next to an armchair in the living room, over a desk in a study. In a hallway or dining room it adds side light. The manufacturer intends it for homes as well as commercial interiors such as hotel rooms.
The form is modern and minimalist: a smooth steel cone, a thin arm and a flat wall plate in a uniform black finish, with no ornament.
