MODES is a two-seater sofa bed without armrests, upholstered in RICH ET80 fabric in a deep ink blue. The backrest is stitched into regular squares and the frame stands on four splayed legs that taper towards the floor.
How much room it takes
The sofa is 178 cm long and 90 cm deep — figures to set against the wall you have in mind for it. Standing free in the room it needs 90 cm for itself plus roughly 80 cm for comfortable passage, so close to 170 cm of floor.
The backrest stops 78 cm above the floor. With no armrests the whole 178 cm is seating, and the sofa can be pushed sideways against another piece of furniture without leaving a gap.
Sitting and sleeping on it
The seat sits 37 cm above the floor, noticeably lower than the 44–47 cm usual for furniture used at a dining table. You sit in a lounging position with your legs stretched forward; a low seat is also harder to get up from, which is worth weighing if the sofa is meant for an older person.
The backrest folds flat and, together with the seat, forms a sleeping surface of 167 × 104 cm. You sleep on the same upholstery you sit on — no separate mattress is added. 167 cm is less than the 200 cm of a standard mattress, so this is occasional sleeping: compare the figure with the height of whoever will be spending the night.
Fabric and finish
The cover is RICH fabric in the ET80 shade, which the maker calls ink — in the photographs a dark navy with a matt, finely grained surface. The upholstered parts are built onto a metal frame.
The backrest quilting is stitched point by point, with no buttons, so the surface stays flat and nothing stands proud once the sofa is opened out.
