L 15 S is a Steinel outdoor lantern in a classic, nostalgic form, fitted with an infrared motion detector. It stands 41 cm tall, takes an E27 lamp and is rated IP44.
The sensor: 180°, 10 m, and a field you can trim
The detector covers 180° and reaches up to 10 m — but those two figures describe different things. The manufacturer quotes the tangential reach r = 10 m (157 m²) separately, for movement across the sensor's field, and the radial reach r = 3 m (14 m²), for movement straight towards the fitting. Infrared always responds less to approach than to crossing, so it pays to mount the light side-on to the direction people arrive from.
The detection field can be cut down
Masking stickers are supplied to block chosen lens segments — that is how you cut a neighbour's path, the street or a bush moving in the wind out of the detection field. The sensor itself also swivels 90° vertically, letting you aim it down, right in front of the door, instead of across the yard. Steinel also lists a sneak-by guard — the sensor sees movement directly beneath the fitting too, in the dead zone where simpler detectors see nothing.
Two power ceilings for E27
The holder is standard, but the limit depends on the lamp type: 60 W for an incandescent and 20 W for an LED or energy-saving lamp. The lower LED figure is not a mistake — it concerns the lamp's electronics and the heat trapped in a closed cover. In practice 20 W is plenty anyway: an LED at that rating gives over 2,000 lumens. No lamp is included. The fitting itself draws 0.55 W on standby.
Settings and installation
The on-time after detection is adjustable from 5 seconds to 35 minutes, and the twilight threshold from 2 to 1,000 lx — via potentiometers in the housing, with no remote and no app. The optimum mounting height is 2 m, the maximum 3 m; higher up the detection field spreads out and sensitivity drops. The fitting weighs 0.74 kg and measures 240 × 190 × 410 mm.
Durability and build
The housing is UV-resistant plastic and the cover transparent plastic — a light construction that does not corrode or flake the way paint on metal does. IP44 means resistance to splashing water from any direction, IK03 covers light impacts, and protection class II (double insulation) removes the need for an earth conductor. The operating range is −20 to +40 °C. Steinel gives a 3-year warranty.
