What size pendant light should hang above a dining table?

A practical guideline is to choose a pendant or group of pendants with a combined diameter that is roughly one-half to two-thirds the width of the table. Maintain about 70–85 cm between the table surface and the bottom of the fixture for comfortable sight lines. For long tables, consider multiple pendants spaced evenly, leaving at least a forearm’s length from each end of the table for balance.

How high should pendant lights hang over a kitchen island?

Typically, pendants sit 70–90 cm above the countertop. Adjust for ceiling height and the size of the pendants—larger shades may sit slightly higher to keep the space feeling open. Aim for even spacing across the island and maintain clear views across the room to avoid visual clutter.

Which color temperature is best for living rooms and workspaces?

Warm whites around 2700K–3000K are comfortable and relaxing in living rooms and bedrooms. Neutral whites near 3500K balance comfort and clarity in dining and circulation areas. For focused tasks or home offices, 4000K can improve visual acuity. Choose one baseline temperature for a cohesive look and add dimming to adapt the mood throughout the day.

What IP rating do I need for bathroom lighting?

Use IP-rated fixtures matched to bathroom zones. Inside a bath or shower (Zone 0), fixtures typically require very high protection (often IP67). The area directly above a bath or shower to a specified height (Zone 1) generally calls for IP65. The surrounding splashing zone (Zone 2) usually requires at least IP44. Always review local codes and manufacturer guidance for exact requirements in your region.

Are LED lights dimmable?

Many LED luminaires and lamps are dimmable, but they must be paired with compatible drivers and dimmers. Check the product specifications to confirm dimming type (such as trailing edge, leading edge, DALI, or 0–10V) and use matched controls for smooth, flicker-free operation across the dimming range.

What is CRI and why does it matter?

CRI, or Color Rendering Index, measures how accurately a light source reveals colors compared to a natural reference. A CRI of 80+ suits most general applications, while 90+ is preferred for kitchens, retail displays, artwork, and anywhere natural-looking tones are important. Higher CRI often enhances the way materials and finishes appear in a space.

How many lumens do I need in a room?

Lighting levels depend on the room’s size and purpose. Living spaces typically feel comfortable around 100–200 lux, while kitchens and work areas may call for 300–500 lux or more on task surfaces. Estimate by multiplying the desired lux by the room’s square metres to find an approximate lumen target, then layer ambient, task, and accent lighting to reach that level.

Can outdoor lights be used in coastal areas?

Coastal environments are tough on finishes due to salt and moisture. Look for outdoor fixtures with robust powder coatings, marine-grade stainless steel, or specially treated metals. Rinse the fittings periodically with fresh water and follow the care instructions to prolong the life and appearance of the product.

How do I clean metal and glass light fixtures?

Switch off power and allow the fixture to cool. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, then clean glass gently with mild soap and water. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners and abrasives that can scratch or dull finishes. Dry thoroughly to prevent water spots, especially on metallic surfaces and mirrors.

Do I need a transformer or driver for recessed spotlights?

Some recessed or spot fixtures operate at low voltage and require a separate transformer or an integrated driver. Others are mains-voltage and connect directly. Always check the product specifications for voltage requirements and ensure any driver or transformer is accessible for future maintenance.

What beam angle should I choose for spotlights?

Use narrow beams (around 15–25 degrees) to highlight art or architectural features, medium beams (36–40 degrees) for focused task lighting, and wider beams (60 degrees and above) for general illumination. Ceiling height also matters; higher ceilings may benefit from narrower beams to maintain brightness on the target surface.

How can I reduce glare from LED lighting?

Choose fixtures with diffusers, baffles, or recessed light sources, and consider accessories like honeycomb grids or snoots when available. Position lights thoughtfully to avoid direct lines of sight into the brightest part of the source, and use dimming to fine-tune light levels for comfort without compromising visibility.
