GUANIPA ceiling light – an asymmetric dome with a reflective gold interior

GUANIPA has an unusual geometry: a metal dome cut at a slant, so its rim is not parallel to the ceiling. On one side the shade almost touches the plaster, on the other it drops away and opens up. The effect is that the fitting looks different from different parts of the room — up close like a section of a sphere, from a distance like a flat patch on the ceiling.

Black outside, gold inside

The outer surface is black and the inside of the dome is finished in gold. That is not only decoration: the gold coating works as a reflector, warming the tone of the reflected light and brightening the inside of the shade, so a lit fitting does not form a dark cavity around the bulb. With the light off, the gold crescent visible in the angled opening is the main colour accent of the whole piece.

Asymmetric light

Because of the slanted cut, the output is not distributed evenly. Most of the light leaves through the wider part of the opening; the rest is bounced off the gold interior and the ceiling. In practice GUANIPA gives light a direction: it is worth orienting it so that the open side throws light where it is needed — towards a table, a sofa or a picture wall, rather than towards a doorway.

One E27 socket rated up to 12 W

The fitting takes a single E27 lamp, but with an important limit: the maximum lamp power is 12 W. That figure is set for modern LED lamps — a classic 60 W incandescent would exceed the rating and must not be used. The light source is not included. Because the bulb is partly visible in the opening, its appearance matters: a decorative filament will play against the gold reflection, while an opal globe gives a calmer result. The fitting has no dimming circuit of its own, but it can be dimmed using a dimmable lamp together with a compatible dimmer.

Dimensions and versions

This version is 40 cm across and 20 cm tall. The GUANIPA collection covers three sizes — 32, 40 and 52 cm — and several finishes, including black with a gold interior, plain black and white. That allows the same form to be repeated across rooms at different scales, or two units to be paired above a longer table. The body is metal throughout and the fitting weighs about 1.7 kg.

Mounting and use

The fitting mounts directly to the ceiling with no drop — the answer for rooms of standard or low height, where a pendant would hang too low. Supply is 230 V, and the IP20 rating restricts it to dry rooms, excluding bathrooms and outdoor spaces. It works best in a bedroom, a hallway, above a staircase, in a home office and anywhere a single expressive but shallow light source is needed.
