Holborn is a small wall lantern from Elstead Lighting's own range, modelled on English lanterns of the Georgian era. It is a half lantern: the flat back sits against the wall and three sides are glazed with clear bevelled glass. The body is solid brass with a brushed finish, and the top is closed by a pierced cap with vertical slots.
How big it is and where to mount it
The lantern is 31 cm high, 13 cm wide and projects 11 cm from the wall, and it weighs 2 kg. It is a compact fitting – compare its size with the frame of your front door or the gap to a downpipe where it is meant to hang.
The manufacturer rates it for exterior use. IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, so the lantern can hang on the facade beside a door, ideally under eaves or a porch roof. The flat back needs a flat wall; for mounting on the corner of a building the manufacturer offers corner brackets C-BKT2-BROWN and C-BKT2-BLACK, sold separately. It is a Class I fitting, so the circuit must include an earth conductor.
What light it gives
The lantern has one E14 lampholder for a bulb of up to 40 W. No bulb is included – the manufacturer recommends a clear, dimmable E14 LED candle bulb, sold separately. The glass is clear, so the bulb stays visible and its shape is part of how the lantern looks.
The fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs: to adjust brightness you need a dimmer and bulbs marked as dimmable. Colour temperature and brightness depend on the bulb you choose.
Which settings it suits
The classic rectangular form with its pierced cap and bevelled panes draws on English Georgian architecture, so it looks most at home beside the door of a house with a traditional facade. It suits facades and the entrances of hotels and restaurants. The Holborn range also comes in dark bronze, polished chrome and verdigris.
