Holborn is an outdoor flush ceiling light shaped like a shallow square lantern: four sides and a base of clear bevelled glass are held in a metal frame, and a pierced band of vertical slats closes the top edge. Small turned feet sit at the corners of the base. The fitting is made of solid brass in a Dark Bronze finish, a dark bronze with a warm metallic sheen. It is Elstead Lighting's own design.
Size and installation
The light is 30 cm wide and 16.5 cm tall, so it covers a 30 cm square on the ceiling and projects only a little below it. It weighs 5.8 kg, which is a lot for a ceiling light: the fixing point has to carry that weight, and on a plasterboard ceiling it needs anchoring into the supporting structure.
This is a Class I fitting, so it must be connected with an earth conductor.
Where to install it
The manufacturer specifies it for exterior installation and names a porch or terrace as typical places. IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, and the flat form lets it go under the low ceiling of a canopy over the front door or a covered terrace, where a hanging lantern would not fit.
Bulbs and light
Inside are two E27 lampholders, each for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulbs are included, so you choose the brightness and colour of the light yourself. The glass is clear on every side, so the bulbs stay visible and their shape becomes part of how the light looks.
The fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs: to dim it you need such bulbs and a dimmer.
