Miles Wall Lantern - 1 Light - Black Elstead

Miles is a wall lantern from Hinkley, distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting. A conical shade of clear seeded glass sits in a black housing made of weather-resistant composite. The lantern is held off the wall on a short arm screwed to a rectangular backplate, and a vertical strap links the rings at the top and bottom of the glass.

Size and where it fits

The lantern is 30.7 cm high and 15.3 cm wide and projects 15.8 cm from the wall. Compare those figures with the free strip of wall beside your front or garage door — on a narrow pier between the door frame and a corner, measure it before you buy. The fitting weighs 1.3 kg, or 1.8 kg boxed.

The manufacturer rates Miles for exterior use at IP44, meaning it is protected against splashing water from any direction, so it can hang on a facade, by an entrance or on a terrace. It is a Class I fitting and must be connected to an earth conductor. Supply voltage is 220–240 V.

Light and lamp

Inside is a single GU10 socket, and an 8 W LED lamp is included. It gives 560 lm, roughly what an old 40–50 W bulb did — enough to light the door, the lock and a few steps in front of the entrance. At 3000 K the light is warm white, close to a traditional bulb. The source is replaceable, so it can later be swapped for any GU10 lamp.

The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps: dimming needs a dimmer in the circuit and a lamp marked as dimmable.

Material and style

The housing is a polymer composite rather than metal, so it does not rust or corrode. The catalogue also lists resistance to sea water, which matters on a house by the coast, where salty air quickly attacks painted steel.

Hinkley describes Miles as transitional, mixing classic lines with modern simplicity and a clear nautical touch; in our catalogue it carries the modern classic and Hampton styles. It suits a house facade as well as the entrance to a hotel or restaurant. The Miles family also includes a painted satin nickel version (HK-MILES-SI).
