Pendant lamp Shanghai Loft black

Loft Shanghai is a pendant lamp with a metal shade shaped like a shallow cone, 36 cm across. The shade is black with a rolled rim, and the lampholder sitting above it is brass-coloured and left on show. The lamp hangs on a black fabric-braided cord ending in a round black ceiling rose.

Size and hanging height

The shade is 36 cm wide and 16 cm deep, which keeps good proportions over a table 80-90 cm wide. The cord is 100 cm long and can be shortened at the rose - above a dining table the bottom edge of the shade usually ends up 70-80 cm above the top, so the light covers the whole surface without shining into the eyes of anyone seated.

Over a bar counter at 100-110 cm the same drop lands correspondingly higher, and above a longer kitchen island several of these are usually hung in a row. The ceiling rose is round and covers a standard junction box.

Which bulb you have to buy

The fitting takes one E27 lamp of up to 60 W. No bulb is supplied, so the colour and brightness are yours to choose: over a dining table 2700-3000 K is the usual pick, a warm light with a slightly yellow cast.

The shade is opaque and open underneath, so the whole output goes down onto the surface below rather than onto the walls. The holder stays visible below the shade, which means a decorative globe bulb will be on show along with it.

Materials and the interiors it suits

The whole shade is metal finished in black, with no ornament and no glass parts. The wide, flat cone and the exposed brass-coloured holder belong to the industrial and loft vocabulary, where the lamp echoes old workshop fittings.

The maker intends it over a dining table, in a living room and in an office. The black shade contrasts with a light worktop and with a brick or concrete wall; against dark furniture it merges into the background and what you see is mainly the pool of light beneath it.
