Willoughby is a small outdoor wall lantern by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting. A cylindrical shade of clear seeded glass hangs from an arched bracket with vintage-style knobs, and the whole fitting is finished in dark oil-rubbed bronze — the form takes its cue from a classic lantern.
Size and mounting
The lantern is 35.5 cm high and 21.3 cm wide and projects 21.9 cm from the wall; it weighs 1.9 kg. Compare those figures with the free space between the door frame and the downpipe or window it will sit beside. It fixes to the wall with an oval back plate.
For a building corner the manufacturer offers separately sold corner brackets, C-BKT2-BROWN and C-BKT2-BLACK. They help where there is no flat stretch of wall by the entrance wide enough for the back plate.
Resistance to the weather
The IP44 rating means protection against water splashing from any direction, so the lantern can hang on a facade exposed to rain. The body is a weather-resistant composite, and the manufacturer states that the finish resists rust and corrosion. The fitting is also declared protected against seawater, which matters for houses by the sea, where salty air quickly breaks down ordinary coatings.
It is a Class I fitting, so it has to be connected to the protective earth conductor.
Which bulb
The lantern has one E27 socket for a bulb of up to 60 W; the bulb is not included. The glass is clear, so the bulb shows through the shade and its look becomes part of the fitting — the manufacturer's photos use a bulb with a visible filament. The lantern is compatible with dimmable bulbs: to dim it you need a dimmer and a bulb sold as dimmable.
