Allegro is a futon sofa bed from WoodMan, built on a frame of solid beech. This variant, WUA-00375, has the frame in a natural finish — unlacquered, oiled with linseed oil and wax — and cream fabric.

A futon, not a conventional sofa bed

The distinction matters in practice. In a conventional sofa bed the seat and the sleeping section are two separate structures joined by a mechanism, and where they meet there is almost always a gap or a ridge. In a futon the mattress is single and continuous — unfolded it forms one flat surface with no break in the middle. Unfolding means lowering the backrest to horizontal, not pulling a metal frame out from under the seat.

The consequence: a futon is noticeably firmer than a typical foam-and-spring sofa. For some people that is an advantage (stronger support for the spine), for others a drawback. The mattress is 13 cm thick — a mid-range figure for futons, giving a compromise between support and comfort.

Sleeping size: 80 x 200 cm

Unfolded, the sleeping surface is 80 x 200 cm — a single width, not a double. Worth checking before you buy: a sofa 203 cm long visually suggests a larger piece, but it sleeps one. It works as a guest bed, as a full-time bed in a studio flat, in a teenager's room or in a study.

The sleeping surface sits at 43 cm — the same as the seat height. That is a comfortable height to get up from, higher than the typical Japanese futon that lies close to the floor.

Solid beech, unlacquered

The frame is made entirely of solid beech. The finish on this version is linseed oil with wax, without lacquer — the surface keeps the natural feel of wood instead of a smooth plastic-like lacquer layer. The legs are 24 cm tall and 3 cm thick, which leaves room to vacuum underneath and visually lightens the piece.

An oiled finish needs different care from lacquer: it does not tolerate strong detergents, but it can be renewed — a scratch can be sanded and re-oiled without replacing the part, which with lacquer is not feasible.

Fabric and colours

For this model WoodMan states a polyester fabric with a polyester-fibre (synthepuch) filling. The cover is removable, but it must not be machine washed — spot cleaning or dry cleaning.

The upholstery range covers ten colours: cream (this variant), beige, ash, graphite, blue, green, yellow, orange, red and brown. The same frame is also offered in walnut and chocolate finishes.

Delivery and assembly — what to know before ordering

The piece arrives in two parcels:

• the frame — a carton of 143 x 82 x 14 cm, weighing 26 kg;
• the soft part (mattress and pillows) — a polythene bag inside a fleece cover, 90 x 80 x 50 cm, weighing 16.9 kg.

The sofa requires self-assembly, and the manufacturer states that two people are needed. Instructions and an assembly kit are supplied. In addition you will need: a hammer, pliers or a 10 mm spanner, flat and cross-head screwdrivers; the manufacturer recommends a driver with an S4/S5 bit.

The frame carton is 143 cm long — worth checking in advance if it has to come up a narrow staircase or into a lift.
