Apollo is a table lamp from Elstead Lighting's own range. Its base is an open frame of crossed flat steel strips in a brushed brass finish, closed at the top and bottom by hexagonal white marble inserts. On top sits a cylindrical shade of white faux silk with a white laminate lining.
How big it is and where to place it
The lamp is 87 cm tall, 43 cm of which is the base. The shade measures 34 cm in diameter and 34 cm in height, and the base is 27.5 cm wide – figures to compare with the top of the chest of drawers, console or desk it will stand on. At this height the lamp rises well above a typical surface, so it suits places with open space above the furniture rather than a spot under a low shelf.
The lamp weighs 7.2 kg, so it needs a stable piece of furniture. It runs from a wall socket via a plug, and as a Class I fitting it needs an earthed socket.
What light it gives
The lamp has one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included – the manufacturer recommends a clear, dimmable E27 LED bulb in the classic pear shape, sold separately. Colour temperature and brightness therefore depend on the bulb you choose.
The manufacturer states that the lamp works with dimmable smart bulbs. That means brightness is adjusted through the bulb itself, for example from an app or remote, rather than by a dimmer built into the lamp. The white shade with its laminate lining diffuses the light and hides the bulb from the side.
Which interiors it suits
The geometric frame of brass strips, the white marble and the plain, smooth shade give the lamp a modern character. It works on a desk or sideboard in an office. The Apollo range also includes a version with a blue shade on the same base.
