Arlen Extra Large Outdoor Pendant - 1 Light - Black & Rattan Elstead

This version of the Hinkley Arlen is a wide, flat, hat-shaped shade: a lattice of all-weather rattan strands tied crosswise and stretched over a black steel frame. A milky globe shielding the bulb is visible under the centre, and the whole fitting hangs from a black cable with a round ceiling plate. It is distributed by Elstead Lighting.

Size and suspension

The shade is a full 76.2 cm across yet only 21 cm deep, so it works like a canopy over a large table — a round top of about 120 cm is visually covered completely. The cable is 182.9 cm long, and the overall height of 36 to 208.9 cm is set during installation. The flat shade can hang fairly low: with a 75 cm table, the lower edge should sit 70–80 cm above the top. The fitting weighs 3 kg.

IP44 protects against water splashing from any direction. The manufacturer intends the pendant for covered terrace and garden areas. It is Class I and needs an earth conductor.

Bulb and light

The E27 socket takes a bulb of up to 60 W, not supplied. The shade is shallow and wide, so light falls mainly downwards onto the table, while it escapes sideways and onto the ceiling through the weave as an open-work pattern. An LED bulb of about 800 lm at 2700 K lights the top with warm light. With a dimmable bulb and a dimmer, brightness can be adjusted.

Style

A loose, hand-made-looking weave in natural colour with black accents is a rustic, boho combination. The Arlen series also includes a tall hanging lantern, 61 cm across.
