Arlen is a large outdoor hanging lantern by Hinkley: an open-work basket of all-weather rattan strands stretched over a black steel frame, narrowing towards the top. Inside, around the socket, hangs a milky globe that shields the bulb. It is distributed by Elstead Lighting.
Size and suspension
The basket is 61 cm across and 57.5 cm tall — a big volume meant for roomy, covered areas: a veranda, gazebo or roofed terrace, as in the room photo. It hangs from a 182.9 cm cable, and the overall height of 73.4 to 246.3 cm is set during installation. Over a patio table the lower edge should sit about 70–80 cm above the top; over a walkway it should clear heads, i.e. above roughly 200 cm from the floor.
The fitting itself weighs 2.4 kg. IP44 protects it from water splashing from any direction, and the manufacturer intends it both outdoors and indoors. It is Class I — the earth conductor is connected during installation.
Bulb and light
The E27 socket takes a bulb of up to 60 W; none is supplied. The milky globe diffuses the light, and the weave throws an open-work shadow around it — after dark the basket is drawn on the ceiling and walls. An LED bulb of about 800 lm at 2700 K gives warm, cosy light over a patio table. With a dimmable bulb and a dimmer, brightness can be adjusted.
Style
The natural colour of the weave and black details are a combination typical of rustic and boho styles. The Arlen series also includes a very wide, flat pendant, 76.2 cm across, in the same finish.
