Ashland Bay is a small outdoor lantern hung on a chain, with a cylindrical clear seeded-glass shade and an aluminium body in a Burnished Bronze finish. The fitting is designed by Kichler and distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting.
Size and suspension
The lantern itself is 32.7 cm high and 15.4 cm in diameter – a size for a covered entrance, a porch or a balcony ceiling, where a larger lantern would crowd a small space. The overall drop adjusts from 43.2 to 230.6 cm, and 182.9 cm of chain is supplied, shortened to suit the height of your ceiling.
The ceiling pan is 12.7 cm across and covers the junction box. The fitting weighs 1.8 kg, and as a Class I luminaire it needs an earth connection – outdoors, that is a job for an electrician.
Where it can hang
An IP44 rating protects the lantern against splashing water from any direction, which is why the manufacturer specifies it for exterior use. It suits a terrace, a balcony or a gazebo, as well as hotel and restaurant gardens – anywhere with a ceiling or beam the pan can be screwed to.
Choosing the bulb
The lantern takes a single E27 bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. The manufacturer suggests an Edison-style LED lamp with a visible filament, which becomes part of the look behind the clear seeded glass. The fitting works with dimmable lamps, so if you plan to use a dimmer, simply buy a bulb marked as dimmable.
Style and finish
The design follows traditional colonial-style lanterns: upright frame rods, rings moulded into the glass and a loop above the body from which the chain hangs. Burnished bronze has a warm metallic tone with lighter worn highlights along the edges, clearly visible in the detail photos. The Ashland Bay range also includes the same lantern in Weathered Zinc, plus wall lanterns.
