Barras Small Wall Lantern - 1 Light - Black Elstead

The small Barras is a Kichler wall lantern with a black aluminium frame and a cylindrical shade of clear ribbed glass. Thin vertical rods hold the glass between two rings, and the lantern projects from a rectangular back plate. The fitting is distributed by Elstead Lighting.

Size and wall space

The lantern is 29 cm tall and 13.7 cm in diameter, projects 15.7 cm from the wall, and its back plate is 12 cm wide. It is a compact size that fits a narrow strip of wall between a door frame and a window, so compare the width with that space on your own facade. The Barras range also includes a medium version, useful beside a taller door or on a wide facade.

The fitting weighs 0.97 kg. It is a Class I fitting, so it must be connected to an earth conductor.

Bulb

Inside there is one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 40 W; the bulb is not included. The glass is clear, so the bulb stays visible, which makes a good-looking bulb, such as a decorative filament type, worth choosing. The ribbing still breaks the light into vertical bands and softens the glare. The fitting works with dimmable bulbs where the circuit has a dimmer.

Outdoors

The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction, so the lantern can hang by an entrance, on a balcony or on a terrace without a canopy. Aluminium does not rust the way steel does, which matters on a fitting left out in the rain.

The form recalls lamps from the early days of electric light: a plain glass cylinder in a black frame, without ornament. It is a classic style that suits a traditional facade as well as simpler architecture, including the entrance of a guesthouse or restaurant.
