Chapel Mini is a small chain-hung lantern in the classic four-sided shape, with a pitched roof and a decorative finial at the bottom. The body is cast aluminium in a black finish, and the sides are glazed with clear glass panels. It comes from Elstead Lighting's own range and is made in England.
Size and hanging height
The lantern itself is 34.5 cm tall and 17 cm wide — a figure to compare with the covered spot where it will hang. The chain is 49 cm long, and the overall drop can be set anywhere from 49.5 to 96.5 cm.
Subtract that drop from the ceiling height above your entrance, balcony or gazebo: the result tells you how much headroom will remain under the bottom of the lantern for walking past. The fitting weighs 1.6 kg.
Light source and connection
Inside is a single E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is supplied, so you choose the colour and brightness of the light yourself. The glass is clear, which means the bulb is fully visible and its shape becomes part of how the lantern looks.
The fitting can be dimmed if you use a bulb marked as dimmable together with a suitable dimmer. It is protection class I, which means it must be connected to an earth conductor — something for your electrician to know before installation. It runs on 230 V.
Outdoor installation and the range
The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction, so the lantern can hang outdoors: under a balcony ceiling, a covered terrace or a gazebo roof. If a glass panel gets broken, the manufacturer lists it as spare part GS39, so the whole fitting does not have to be replaced.
The Chapel Mini range also includes up and down wall lanterns, a pillar lantern and a pedestal lantern, all in the same black finish. That lets you light an entrance, a path and a terrace with fittings of one design.
