Chicago is a small pedestal lantern in turn-of-the-century style: a clear seeded glass shade enclosed in an aluminium frame with a scalloped roof and a decorative finial, set on a fluted base. The body is cast aluminium in a textured black finish. The fitting comes from Elstead Lighting's own range.
Size and where it goes
The lantern is 51 cm tall and 23.5 cm wide. It stands on a square plate at the foot of the base, so it is mounted on a flat surface — the top of a gate pillar, a low wall or a plinth by the steps. Compare the 23.5 cm width with the cap of the pillar it will stand on. The fitting weighs 1.94 kg.
The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction, which is why the manufacturer intends the lantern for outdoor installation. It is protection class I, which means it must be connected to an earth conductor — worth bearing in mind when running the supply up to the pillar.
Bulb and light
Inside is a single E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is supplied. The distributor recommends the clear Litec E27 Edison-shape (ST64) LED bulb, rated 7 W, 800 lm and 3000 K — the brightness of an old 60 W bulb in warm white. The seeded glass softens the view of the bulb but its shape stays visible, which is why a decorative bulb suits this lantern.
The fitting can be dimmed when the bulb is marked as dimmable and a suitable dimmer is used.
Style and the range
Chicago is a range of classic aluminium lanterns in turn-of-the-century style, offered in textured black with blown seeded glass. The same small pedestal lantern also comes in a bronze finish with a rusty patina.
