Mantra ELSA 8244+8265 is a pendant made of two items from Mantra's own catalogue: the 8244 globe shade and the 8265 single-light ceiling base. The globe is 25 cm across, in clear bronze-tinted glass, and inside it stands an opal cone that carries the lampholder. The base is a gold metal disc, 10 cm in diameter and 2.5 cm deep.
What height to hang it at
The shade hangs on a 2 m clear cable and the total suspension height adjusts between 40 and 235 cm. The shade itself is 35 cm tall, so with the drop shortened to the minimum the fitting comes down a little under half a metre from the ceiling.
Over a dining table the bottom of the shade usually sits 70–80 cm above the top. A 25 cm diameter is small for a single point over a table — a globe this size works better in a row of several over a counter or island than alone over a large table. The base is suitable for stretch ceilings.
What light it gives and what you need to buy
The fitting takes one E27 lamp of up to 20 W. No bulb is included, so colour and brightness are your choice; a lamp of around 800 lm matches the old 60 W bulb.
The light travels two ways. The opal cone inside the globe diffuses it downward onto the surface below, while the clear bronze glass of the globe lets the rest out sideways, tinting it and giving it a warm cast. The fitting is not dimmable.
Build and the system it belongs to
The globe is glass, the base metal in gold (RAL 1014). The shade weighs 1 kg and the base 0.19 kg. The fitting is protection class I, so the installation needs an earth conductor, and IP20 settles that it mounts in dry interiors only. The manufacturer gives a three-year warranty.
ELSA is Mantra's modular system designed by José Ignacio Ballester: the same shade can be ordered on a one-, three-, four- or seven-light ceiling base, or on a linear bar. In this set the 8244 globe comes with the single-light 8265 base.
