Merapi is an oval ceramic plate, 25.9 cm long and 18 cm wide, whose entire surface carries an embossed pattern of overlapping oval, pebble-like bumps. One end has a glossy amber-brown glaze that pools in the hollows of the relief, while the rest of the plate is matte, in a dark brown that shades into graphite.
Size and space on the table
The plate measures 25.9 × 18 cm and stands 2 cm high, so it is flat with a low rim. The elongated shape takes up less room across the table than a round plate of the same length: compare the 18 cm width with the free strip between two place settings, or with the depth of the shelf where it will be kept. The maker intends it for serving salads, roasted vegetables and small pastries, which is why we list it for the kitchen and the dining room.
The plate weighs 0.93 kg. The Merapi range also includes cups, a sake pourer, bowls and rectangular and square plates in the same glaze, so several pieces can be combined into a serving set.
Hand-applied glaze and care
Each plate is glazed by hand, so the boundary between the glossy and matte areas and the exact shade of brown vary slightly from piece to piece. The plate you receive will not be an exact copy of the photo.
The maker states that it is food-safe, dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe. For hand washing, warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft sponge are enough; dry the plate thoroughly afterwards so that no water marks stay on the glaze. The maker advises against abrasive scourers and sudden temperature changes, which can damage the surface, so a hot plate should not go straight under cold water. The plate is made in China.
