Porter 40 is a pendant light with a dome-shaped shade of galvanised steel, 40 cm in diameter. The sheet shows the irregular silver-grey pattern of the zinc coating, and a metal grid covers the opening of the shade. The inside is galvanised too, so the lamp looks the same from below as from the side.
Dimensions and installation
The shade is 40 cm across and 30 cm tall. That diameter keeps its proportions over an 80–90 cm wide table, with the lower edge of the shade hanging 70–80 cm above the top. The cable is 200 cm long — compare that figure with your ceiling height and the drop you plan.
The lamp weighs 1.06 kg. Screws for fixing the bracket to the ceiling are not included; according to the mounting instructions the holes for wall plugs are drilled with a 6 mm bit. It is a Class II fitting, so it needs no earth conductor. The black plastic-sheathed cable is not designed to be replaced.
Bulb and light
The E27 lampholder takes a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included, so brightness and colour depend on the one you choose — an LED of about 800 lm matches an old 60 W bulb, and over a dining table most people choose 2700–3000 K, a warm, slightly yellow light.
The steel shade does not let light through and directs it downwards onto the surface below. To change the bulb, you unscrew the grid that covers the opening of the shade.
Style and use
The raw galvanised sheet and the grid across the opening give the lamp a clearly industrial character; Porter is a whole series of lights in the same finish. The manufacturer intends this pendant above all for a dining table, and its size also suits a living room, bedroom, hotels and restaurants.
