Petra table lamp - 1 light source - Bone White Elstead

Petra is a Flambeau table lamp, distributed by Elstead Lighting, in a Bone White finish – a broken, bone-toned white. The base is built from three elements: a cube-shaped foot, a sphere halfway up and a slim rod, and the foot and sphere carry an irregular, sculpted texture. On top sits a tapered parchment shade in distressed white, with fine crackling across its surface and a sculpted finial at the top.

Size and space on the surface

The lamp is 73.7 cm tall and 25.4 cm wide. Those are the proportions of a tall, slender lamp: it takes up little surface area, but the shade rises well above a chest of drawers or side table, so compare its height with whatever hangs above the piece of furniture it will stand on. It weighs 2 kg.

The lamp runs from a plug, so no installation is needed – only a socket nearby. It is a Class I appliance, which means its plug has an earth contact and needs a socket with an earth pin. The manufacturer intends it for indoor use only.

Bulb and light

There is one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included, so you choose the colour yourself: for a lamp in a living room or bedroom, 2700 K is the usual choice – warm, slightly yellow light that sits well with the creamy tone of the shade. The fitting works with dimmable bulbs – brightness can be adjusted once you pair a dimmable bulb with a dimmer.

Materials and finish

The base is made of cast resin and steel, and the shade of parchment. Bone white is not a pure white but a warm, slightly creamy shade, and close-up photographs show darker rubbed-back tones in the recesses of the texture that bring out the sculpted pattern. These details only show up close, so the lamp looks best where it can be seen at arm's length – on a living-room chest of drawers, a bedside table or a desk.
