Hinkley Plantation is a flush ceiling light with a pineapple-shaped shade of clear optic glass, capped at the top by a brass rim. The rim carries an embossed diamond pattern, and a cast leaf-like finial with a ball tip finishes the shade underneath. The metalwork is solid brass in a Burnished Brass finish, meaning polished to a bright, warm sheen. The fitting comes from the American brand Hinkley, distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting.
Size and mounting
The light measures 40.6 cm in diameter and 22.2 cm in height — that is all it takes from the room's height, because it sits directly against the ceiling with no drop. It suits rooms where a pendant would bring the ceiling down too far.
It weighs 4.99 kg, noticeably more than a lightweight ceiling fitting, so in a plasterboard ceiling it has to be fixed to the supporting structure. It is a Class I fitting and must be connected to a protective earth.
Light source
Under the shade there are three E27 lampholders, each rated for a bulb of up to 60 W. Bulbs are not included. The glass is clear, so the bulb shape shows through the shade; the manufacturer recommends classic clear E27 LED bulbs in the A60 pear shape. With dimmable bulbs, the light can be run from a dimmer.
Style and use
The ornate form, the pineapple motif and polished brass are classic in style — the manufacturer itself calls the Plantation collection a Hinkley classic. The light is for indoor use only, above all in a bedroom or dining room, where a ceiling-hugging fitting lights the room with nothing hanging down.
