Redding Station is a medium-sized outdoor wall light modelled on an old station lamp: a shade with a stepped, bell-shaped profile hangs from a curved arm fixed to a rectangular wall plate, and ribbed prismatic glass closes it underneath. The body is painted aluminium in a finish the manufacturer calls Painted Distressed Bronze. It is designed by Feiss (Generation Lighting) and distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting.
Size and installation
The fitting is 31.8 cm high and 30.5 cm wide, and projects 34.1 cm from the wall – compare that last figure with the space beside your door so that neither an open door nor passers-by catch the shade. It weighs 3.15 kg. As a Class I luminaire it needs an earth connection, so outdoors it is installed by an electrician.
How it lights
Inside is a single E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. Light leaves only downwards, through prismatic glass that diffuses it – the manufacturer marks the fitting as dark-sky and bat friendly because it does not shine upwards. The fitting works with dimmable lamps, so with a dimmer simply choose a bulb marked as dimmable. Should the glass break, the manufacturer lists a spare diffuser under code GS582.
Outdoors
An IP44 rating protects the light from splashing water from any direction, which is why the manufacturer specifies it for exterior use – on a facade, by an entrance, over a garage door or on a terrace wall. The warehouse-lamp form with its gooseneck arm gives it an industrial character. The Redding Station range also includes a chain-hung lantern and a version in Restoration Bronze.
