Redding Station is an outdoor chain lantern by Feiss (Generation Lighting), distributed by Elstead Lighting. An aluminium body with several turned rings flares into a wide, flat hood 30.5 cm across, and beneath it sits a prismatic glass diffuser with radial ribbing. The manufacturer calls the finish painted distressed bronze.
Size and suspension
The lantern itself is 27.6 cm tall. It hangs on 120 cm of chain, and the overall drop from the ceiling can be set anywhere from 40.3 to 150 cm. Compare that range with the ceiling height of the porch or canopy and with the headroom that has to stay clear for people walking underneath. The fitting weighs 3.6 kg and fixes to the ceiling with a round canopy.
Outdoors
The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction, so the lantern can hang under the roof of a terrace, veranda, balcony or gazebo where driving rain reaches. The manufacturer intends it for seating areas, covered entrances and porches. It is a Class I fitting, so the supply cable must include a protective earth conductor connected to the earth terminal.
If the glass diffuser is ever damaged, the manufacturer offers it as a spare part, code GS583, so the whole fitting does not need replacing.
Bulb and light
The lantern has one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. The prismatic glass diffuses the light and sends it downwards beneath the fitting, while the opaque hood limits light going upwards. The fitting works with dimmable lamps, so dimming needs a bulb marked as dimmable and a dimmer. A 2700–3000 K bulb gives warm light close to a traditional incandescent.
