Winchfield 2 Light Medium Picture Light - Aged Brass & Matte Black Elstead

Winchfield is a picture light – a wall light fitted above a picture frame – with a curved, half-round shade 44.5 cm wide. The shade and the rectangular back plate are matte black, while the jointed arm and the end caps of the shade are aged brass. It belongs to Elstead Lighting's own range, which the maker describes as bringing a mid-century modern look to picture lighting.

Size and positioning over a picture

The fitting is 44.5 cm wide and 12.7 cm high, and projects 31.8 cm from the wall. Compare the shade width with the width of the frame: the light spreads over roughly that span, so a much wider picture is better served by the larger version. The arms are adjustable, which lets you set the angle of the shade to the canvas. The fitting weighs 1.5 kg and is Class I, so it must be connected to an earth conductor.

Bulbs

The shade holds two E14 bulbs of up to 40 W each. Bulbs are not included. The shade covers them from the front and directs the light towards the picture, so the bulb itself does not glare at the viewer. The fitting is compatible with dimming: it needs dimmable bulbs and a dimmer switch in the installation.

Construction and variants

The body, arm and shade are steel, and the brass parts are plated. The fitting is for indoor use – above a painting or photograph in a dining room or hallway. The Winchfield family offers the same model in plain aged brass, with an oak-effect shade and in polished nickel with a white marble effect, plus a large four-bulb version for wider frames.
