ZORENCA is a single pendant with a gypsum shade shaped as a cylinder closed by a dome at the top and open at the bottom. The shade is 10 cm across, white and matt, and hangs on a white flex ending in a small round ceiling cup.
How high to hang it
The full suspension length is 185 cm and is shortened during installation to whatever height is needed. Over a dining table the lower edge of the shade usually ends up 70-80 cm above the top, which puts the light on the setting or the work surface and keeps the fitting out of the sightline of anyone seated.
A 10 cm shade lights a narrow circle, so over a table or kitchen island longer than a metre it is worth planning several in a row rather than one. The ceiling cup is small and covers an ordinary installation box.
Which bulb to buy for it
The fitting takes one E27 lamp and no bulb is included, so one has to be chosen separately. The manufacturer gives a maximum lamp power of 12 W, which on an E27 rules out traditional incandescent and halogen lamps: an LED bulb is what fits, and 12 W of LED is roughly the old sixty-watt equivalent.
Because the shade is open underneath, the bulb is visible from below. A frosted lamp gives a softer light and does not glare at anyone sitting under the fitting; a clear bulb with a visible filament produces harder, pointed reflections. Colour and brightness come with the bulb, so the same fitting can be set to warm light over a table or to neutral light over a worktop.
The gypsum shade
The shade is cast in gypsum rather than metal or glass. The surface is mineral, matt and slightly grainy, so it does not reflect spotlights and in texture it reads like the plaster of the ceiling. Gypsum is also more brittle than metal, which is worth bearing in mind in transport and installation.
