Mid Century Chandeliers

Mid century chandeliers threw away everything a chandelier had been for two centuries. No tiers, no crystal, no candle arms curving upward — instead a small central sphere with straight brass rods radiating out of it in every direction, each ending in a bare lamp. That is the sputnik, named after the satellite launched in 1957, and it is the form the period is remembered for. Beside it sit two quieter relatives: the spider, where fine cables run out to shades hung at different heights, and the cascade, where a handful of opal globes drop on separate stems from one canopy.

Three forms, three different rooms

Sputnik

Rigid arms of equal length from a central ball, usually brass or blackened steel, with anywhere from six to thirty-six lamps. It is symmetrical in three dimensions, so it has no back and no front and looks the same from the stairs as from the sofa. That makes it right for the middle of a hall or a stairwell and difficult over a dining table, where the arms nearest you sit at eye level.

Spider

One canopy, several thin cables running out to a hook or a ceiling point and then dropping to individual shades. Because the drop of each arm is adjustable, it fits ceilings and tables that a rigid fitting cannot. It is also the only one of the three you can install over an off-centre table without moving the electrical point.

Cascade of globes

Opal spheres on stems of different lengths from a single plate, usually three to seven of them. Much softer than a sputnik, because every source is diffused, and the one version of the three that can be the only light in a room.

A useful rule from the period's own catalogues: add the room's length and width in metres and read the answer in centimetres. A 4 by 5 m room takes a fitting around 90 cm across — but on a sputnik, reduce that by a third, because the arms make it read far larger than a solid shade of the same diameter.

Hanging height

  • The lowest point of any arm must clear 2.1 m above a floor people walk on. On a sputnik that is measured to the tip of the lowest arm, not to the central ball, and the difference is often 25 cm.
  • In a stairwell, measure from the highest tread the fitting hangs over. A chandelier sized for the hall floor becomes a hazard once you are three steps up.
  • Over a table, the bottom of the fitting sits 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop — but a sputnik at that height puts bare lamps directly in the sightline of everyone seated. If the table is where it has to go, choose the cascade of opal globes instead.
  • In a double-height space, hang the fitting so its centre is roughly at the level of the upper floor. Higher and it belongs to nobody; lower and it blocks the void.

The bulbs are part of the design, and that is a problem

A sputnik has no shades. Every lamp is visible from everywhere in the room, which means the choice of bulb matters more than on any other fitting in the house.

  • Small candle or golfball lamps on E14, or G9 capsules in the finer reworkings, on 230 V. Twelve to eighteen of them at 4 W each is a real load on a lighting circuit and a real cost to replace, so check what the fitting takes before buying.
  • Frosted or opal lamps, not clear. A clear bulb at the end of a bare arm is a point source pointed straight at your eyes from a dozen directions at once.
  • 2700 K, and the same batch throughout. On a fitting where every source is visible simultaneously, a single lamp half a step cooler than the rest is instantly obvious.
  • A dimmer is close to mandatory. At full output a multi-arm fitting with no diffusion is uncomfortable in anything smaller than a hall; at 30 per cent it becomes the sculpture it was drawn as.

Fixing it to the ceiling

These fittings are heavier than they look — a brass sputnik of 80 cm can weigh several kilograms once the arms and lamps are on it — and the load hangs from one point. It needs to reach a joist or a proper cavity fixing rated for the weight, not the plasterboard anchor that came in the box. Assembly usually means screwing each arm into a threaded boss on the central ball, which is done on the ground and then lifted; budget for two people and check the canopy diameter covers the ceiling box you already have.

Questions people ask

Is a sputnik too much for an ordinary room?

Often, yes. It is the loudest object the period produced and it does not share a room politely. In a 2.5 m ceiling it works in a hall, over a stairwell or in a corner of an open-plan space; in the middle of a small living room it becomes the only thing anyone sees. A cascade of opal globes gives most of the same period signal at a fraction of the volume.

How many arms should it have?

Fewer than you think, because arm count and diameter are separate decisions and the visual weight comes mostly from the count. Eight arms on a 60 cm frame reads as a graphic star; eighteen on the same frame reads as a dense ball. For a first mid-century fitting, stay at the lower end.

Will it light the room on its own?

It will put light everywhere, which is not the same thing. A dozen small undiffused sources give flat, shadowless, slightly glaring light with no direction to it. Treat it as the room's ceiling layer and add a floor lamp and a table lamp underneath — which is what these interiors did anyway.

What if the ceiling is too low?

How does this differ from a vintage chandelier?

Sharply. Mid-century is bare geometry in new-looking brass; vintage is about visible age — patinated metal, smoked glass, a fitting that looks as though it has been in the building longer than you have. Vintage chandeliers is the page for that reading.
