Kaja: decorative lighting from a Polish family factory

Kaja is a family-run Polish maker of decorative lighting based in Łyski, near Białystok. The Olszewski family has run the business since 1995. Kaja has its own production hall and machine park, which lets it control every stage of a lamp's making, from first concept to finished product. Fittings are assembled by hand and finished in the company's own powder-coating plant, and the lamps are built on Kaja's own designs using Polish and European components.

From ornate classics to clean modern lines

The style range is wide. At one end are traditional, richly decorated lamps; at the other, modern pieces in plain powder-coated metal with very little ornament. Kaja names its products by series, so a pendant and a wall light from the same line share their shape and finish and sit comfortably together in one room. Many models come in more than one colour – the MICA desk lamp, for example, in white, black and silver.

What to check before you buy

• Bulbs. Most Kaja lamps take replaceable bulbs, for example with an E27, E14 or GU10 cap. The product page says whether bulbs are included and the maximum wattage per lamp holder.
• Light colour. With a replaceable bulb, the colour of the light depends on the bulb you fit: warm white for a living room, neutral white for a desk.
• Drop. On chandeliers hung from a chain, the height is set by removing links, so the light can be matched to the ceiling and the table below.
• Split switching. Some larger chandeliers can be wired to two switches so that only part of the arms lights up. This needs a double switch on the wall.
• Location. For a bathroom or the garden, check the stated IP rating first.
