Markslöjd: Scandinavian lighting from Sweden
Markslöjd is a Swedish lighting brand founded in 1963 in Skene, in the area of Sweden known as the Textile Kingdom. The company began in handicraft – "slöjd" in Swedish – and in its early years mainly made turned wooden lamp bases and fabric shades, with almost all production in the municipality of Mark. Its head office and central warehouse are still in Sweden, although, as the maker itself says, most production now takes place in Asia. Markslöjd designs lighting for homes, public spaces and outdoor use, aiming to combine function with timeless design.
Light for a Scandinavian home
Markslöjd lamps carry the Scandinavian mix of simplicity and cosiness. They are made in metal, glass, wood, fabric and rattan, in black, white, brass, beige and greige, and some lamps with amber glass. The range follows Swedish home traditions, where a lamp in every window and seasonal lights at Christmas are part of the year. That is why the range includes window lamps, Advent candlesticks and paper stars to hang in the window in winter.

What to look out for
-
Plug-in or hard-wired. Table and floor lamps, and some wall lights, come with a cable, plug and switch, so no electrician is needed. Ceiling lights and many pendants are wired into the mains.
-
Light source. Some models take an E27, E14 or GU10 bulb of your choice, while others have integrated LED. The product page gives the maximum wattage and whether a bulb is included.
-
Dimming. On dimmable models, check how the light is dimmed. Some use a light source or switch with built-in step dimming rather than a wall dimmer.
-
Low-voltage garden lighting. The garden system runs from a transformer. Add up the wattage of the lights you connect and choose a transformer with some headroom.
-
IP rating. For bathrooms and outdoors, pick a light whose stated IP rating suits the zone or location.
