Astrid is a large Hinkley pendant supplied by Elstead Lighting: eleven open, polyhedral cages of welded steel wire, each on its own cord, hanging together in a tight cluster. The finish is two-tone — the cages are matte bronze, while the lamp holders and the collecting sleeve above the cluster are Deluxe Gold.
Dimensions and installation
The cluster itself is 84.6 cm in diameter and 108.3 cm tall, and the pendant weighs 13.23 kg. It hangs on a 304.8 cm chain and the overall drop from the ceiling ranges from 152.5 to 457.3 cm. Even the shortest drop exceeds one and a half metres, so this is a fitting for rooms with a high ceiling — a figure to compare with your room height and with where the lowest cage should end up. At over 13 kg, the ceiling fixing point must be able to carry that weight. The pendant is Class I and must be connected to an earth conductor.
Lamps and light
Astrid takes eleven E27 lamps of up to 60 W each; lamps are not included. The cages have no shades, so the lamps are fully visible — the maker shows it with long tubular filament lamps. An exposed source shines straight into the eyes, so with eleven points, lamps of moderate brightness and a warm colour of around 2700 K work better. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps: to adjust brightness you need dimmable lamps and a dimmer.
Form and intended use
The construction is steel. The maker describes Astrid as an airy geometric form with a robust welded build, where the two-tone finish emphasises the layering of the cages. The pendant is for indoor use, above a dining table. The Astrid series also includes smaller pendants with one, three and five lamps.
