Gotham is a four-light pendant by Quoizel, distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting. Its steel frame in a brushed brass finish is made of curved arms that meet at a ring at the top and hold a wide cream fabric drum shade at the bottom, closed underneath by a glass diffuser. Glass balls sit at the sides of the band. The maker cites the lights of Manhattan as its inspiration.
Size and hanging
The fitting is 58.4 cm in diameter and 61 cm tall. That is a large shade: over a table 80–90 cm wide, a shade of about 40 cm keeps the proportions, so Gotham suits a wider or longer table, or a spacious room.
The pendant hangs on 121.9 cm of chain, and the overall drop can be set anywhere from 69.9 to 191.8 cm. Over a table, the bottom edge of a pendant usually sits 70–80 cm above the top: with a 75 cm table and a 260 cm ceiling that needs a drop of about 110 cm, right in the middle of the range. The fitting weighs 6.8 kg, so the fixing point in the ceiling must be able to carry that weight.
What kind of light it gives
Inside the shade there are four E27 lampholders, each for a bulb of up to 60 W. Bulbs are not included, so you need to buy four. The cream fabric and the glass diffuser underneath hide the bulbs, which makes the light diffused and keeps it out of the eyes of people sitting at the table. For a dining room most people choose warm 2700–3000 K bulbs.
The fitting can be dimmed with bulbs marked as dimmable and a dimmer in the wiring. It is Class I, so it has to be connected to the protective earth, and it is for indoor use only.
Construction and use
The frame is steel with a uniform brushed brass finish, including the ceiling pan and the chain; the shade is fabric, and the diffuser and balls are glass. Warm metal paired with a light shade is a nod to elegant New York interiors. The maker intends it to hang over a dining table, and the same design is also available in Imperial Silver.
