Bijou is a pendant light by Alora Mood, distributed by Elstead Lighting, built from three matte opal glass forms stacked one above the other: a cylinder, a sphere and a double cone. It hangs on a cord, and the round ceiling plate and the slim connectors between the shades are finished in brushed nickel.
Dimensions and hanging height
The fitting itself is 49.3 cm tall and 19.8 cm in diameter, so it is slim and upright: it takes up little space sideways while filling the vertical space above a table or worktop. The overall drop adjusts from 61 to 236.4 cm, and the cord is 182.8 cm long. Over a standard 75 cm dining table the bottom of the glass usually sits 70–80 cm above the tabletop, which this range reaches even under a higher ceiling.
The ceiling plate is 14 cm across and 2.5 cm deep, and the light weighs 1.7 kg. It is a Class I fitting, which means the installation needs an earth conductor to connect it.
What light it gives
The light source is an integrated 20 W LED module supplied with the fitting, so there are no bulbs to buy. The module is part of the light, though, and is not swapped like an ordinary bulb. Its 1060 lm output is roughly what an old 75 W bulb gave: enough to light a table or an island, while in a larger room the pendant works alongside general lighting.
At 3000 K the light is warm white, calm for meals and in the evening. The matte opal glass diffuses the light instead of throwing a hard beam in one direction, so the fitting glows softly into the room as well as down onto the surface.
Where it fits
The manufacturer intends Bijou for use above a dining table and over a kitchen island. The modernist style shows in the geometry: each of the three shades is a different simple form, with no ornament. The light is for indoor use only. The Bijou series offers the same shape in aged gold and matte black as well.
