Chasm is an outdoor wall lantern by Quoizel, distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting, shaped as an upright hexagonal aluminium tube. The body is finished in matte black and wrapped halfway up by a broad band painted to look like wood. The tube is open at the top and bottom, so the fitting throws light up and down the wall at the same time.
Size and mounting on the facade
The medium version is 38.6 cm tall and 17.2 cm wide, and it projects 13 cm from the wall. Compare these figures with the strip of wall next to the door or between a window and the corner — the fitting needs a flat surface at least 17.2 cm wide. For mounting on the corner of a building, the maker offers a separately sold corner bracket (C-BKT2-BLACK or C-BKT2-BROWN).
The lantern weighs 1.74 kg and is rated IP44, meaning it is protected against splashing water from any direction and can be mounted on an outside wall. It is Class I, so it has to be connected to the protective earth.
What kind of light it gives
The light comes from two integrated LED modules that are already included, so there is nothing to buy, but they are not replaced like an ordinary bulb. Each gives 500 lm, one shining up and one down. At 3000 K the light is warm white, and a colour rendering index above Ra 80 is enough to recognise faces and colours clearly at the entrance.
Because the light leaves only through the open ends of the tube, it draws two beams on the wall, upward and downward, while the body itself stays dark. The effect shows best on a textured facade such as stone or structured render.
Construction and use
The body and band are aluminium, which does not rust the way steel does, and the maker gives the fitting a 3-year guarantee. The geometric, modern form works by a front door, across a facade and on the outside walls of hotels and restaurants. The Chasm range also includes a larger version of this lantern.
