Chicago is a single-head garden lamp post made of cast aluminium in a textured black finish. The lantern is glazed with clear blown seeded glass, with small air bubbles trapped in it, while the fluted column, moulded base and ornate cap follow the street lanterns of the turn of the 20th century.
Height and where it stands
Overall height is 246.5 cm and the diameter 28 cm, so the lantern sits well above head height and lights the ground from above rather than just the edge of a path like a low bollard. Compare that height with the spot you have in mind by a driveway, gate or garden path. The fitting weighs 6.53 kg.
The manufacturer rates it for exterior use. IP44 means protection against water splashing from any direction and against solid objects larger than 1 mm. The lamp post is protection class I, so it must be connected to a protective earth conductor on a 220–240 V supply.
Light source
The fitting takes one E27 bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included, so you choose the colour and brightness yourself — through the clear glass the bulb itself stays visible, which is why a decorative Edison-style lamp suits it. The manufacturer recommends, as a separately sold accessory, a 7 W E27 LED filament lamp giving 800 lm at 3000 K; 3000 K is warm white, and 800 lm is roughly what an old 60 W bulb gave.
The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps: with a dimmer in the circuit, use a bulb marked as dimmable.
Construction
The body and column are cast aluminium, which does not rust outdoors the way steel does. The matt, textured black finish has no gloss. Elstead Lighting offers other lanterns in the same classic style within the Chicago series.
