Datsun is an armchair on an oak frame, upholstered in brown top-grain leather that has been deliberately aged. The sides are open, so the structure stays visible right through, and the back is divided into horizontal channels. The arms are cut from timber and bent into a curve, with no padding on them.
How much room it takes
The chair measures 70 cm wide, 76 cm deep and 80 cm high. Standing it in a corner, add roughly 80 cm of clear passage alongside that depth — together that is over a metre and a half out from the wall.
The seat sits at 45 cm, about where a dining chair seat sits. From that height you get up without pushing off, unlike from a low club chair. Open sides and a set-back frame mean the chair does not hide the floor behind it.
The leather and the frame
Gallery Direct lists the materials as oak, plywood, leather, foam and polyester fibre. The leather is aged on purpose: each piece is manipulated and scrunched so that an uneven tone and visible creasing develop. Differences in surface pattern between individual chairs are therefore intended, and are not a fault to claim against.
The oak frame carries the whole structure — it forms the arms, the legs and the stretcher joining them at the back. The chair weighs 14.1 kg net and 18 kg boxed; the carton measures 70 × 78 × 81 cm, a figure to check against your door opening and stairwell width.
The rest of the Datsun range
The same model comes as a two-seater sofa and as a footstool, and beyond the Vintage Brown leather Gallery Direct offers bouclé and sheepskin finishes. If the chair is to stand beside the sofa from the same range, compare their depths: both are 76 cm.
