Dawson is a medium outdoor wall lantern by Hinkley, supplied through Elstead Lighting. A slightly tapered black aluminium body frames four panes of clear bevelled glass, and above the roof rises a large arched handle in a contrasting burnished bronze finish. The manufacturer intends it for outdoor installation.
Size and space on the wall
The lantern is 42.8 cm tall including the handle and 20.3 cm wide, and it projects 24.3 cm from the wall. Compare the width with the free space between the door frame and a downpipe or corner, and the projection with any strip of wall swept by a door leaf or shutter. The fitting weighs 3 kg.
At the back is a flat mounting plate that screws to the wall. For a building corner the manufacturer offers a separately sold corner bracket, C-BKT2-BLACK or C-BKT2-BROWN – useful where there is no flat section of wall beside the entrance.
Which bulb to choose
The fitting has a single E27 socket and takes a lamp of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. The glass is fully clear, so the bulb stays visible from every side – its shape and colour become part of the lantern's look, which is worth keeping in mind alongside brightness.
The lantern is compatible with dimmable lamps: if the circuit has a dimmer, choose a bulb marked as dimmable.
Construction and conditions of use
The body is made of aluminium, which does not rust, and the IP44 rating means protection against water splashing from any direction. The manufacturer intends this lantern for a facade by the entrance, a terrace or a garden. The classic shape – a four-sided roof, a slim frame with visible rivets and the arched handle – recalls traditional street lanterns.
The fitting is protection class I, so it must be connected to a protective earth conductor – the wiring at the mounting point needs an earth. It runs on 220–240 V mains voltage.
