Dawson is a large outdoor wall lantern by the American brand Hinkley, distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting. A slightly tapered black aluminium body frames clear bevelled glass panels, and a large arching handle in a contrasting burnished bronze finish rises above the roof. Inside stand two candle sleeves for the bulbs.
Size and mounting by the entrance
The lantern is 55.6 cm high and 20.3 cm wide and projects 24.3 cm from the wall. It is noticeably bigger than a typical wall light, so compare its height with the stretch of wall beside the door or between the windows where it will hang. It weighs 4 kg and needs a solid fixing into the masonry.
It mounts on a flat wall. Where the entrance offers only a corner, the manufacturer sells corner brackets separately: C-BKT2-BROWN and C-BKT2-BLACK. It is a Class I fitting, which means it must be connected to an earth conductor.
Outdoors
The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction — the usual level for fittings on an outside wall: a facade, a front door, a terrace. Aluminium does not rust the way steel does, which matters for a fitting that stays outdoors all year round.
Bulbs and light
There are two E14 sockets, each rated for a bulb of up to 40 W. Bulbs are not included — the manufacturer suggests clear candle-shaped LED bulbs, sold separately. The clear glass shows the bulbs on their sleeves, so their shape is part of the lantern's look, and the colour of the light comes from the bulbs you choose: 2700 K is warm, slightly yellow light, 3000 K warm white. The fitting can be dimmed with dimmable bulbs and a dimmer that works with them.
The form follows the traditional carriage lantern, while the plain, restrained frame and the contrasting handle lead the manufacturer to describe it as transitional — between classic and contemporary.
