The large Fitzgerald is a rectangular wall lantern with clear seeded-glass panels set in an aluminium body finished in textured black. Upright rods and the loop over the roof, in a burnished bronze finish, provide the contrast. The fitting is designed by Hinkley and distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting.
Size and installation
The lantern is 61 cm high and 23.4 cm wide, and projects 23.6 cm from the wall. That height suits a wide front door, a garage door or a large flat facade – beside a narrow entrance the smaller versions in the range are the better fit. It weighs 4.35 kg, so it is fixed to masonry or another load-bearing surface.
As a Class I luminaire it needs an earth connection, which outdoors is a job for an electrician. Where there is no flat wall beside the door, the manufacturer offers separately sold corner brackets, C-BKT2-BLACK and C-BKT2-BROWN, which allow the lantern to be mounted on the corner of a building.
Light source
Inside are three E14 lampholders, each for a bulb of up to 40 W. Bulbs are not included. Because the glass is clear, candle bulbs with a visible interior look like candles in an old lantern here. The fitting works with dimmable lamps – with a dimmer, simply buy three bulbs marked as dimmable.
Outdoors
An IP44 rating protects the lantern from splashing water from any direction, which is why the manufacturer specifies it for exterior use – on the front of a house or at the entrance to a hotel or restaurant. Its industrial character comes from the riveted corners, the vented cap on the roof and the plain pairing of black with metallic bronze. The Fitzgerald range also includes small one-light and medium two-light lanterns in the same finish.
