Large wall lamp Swirl - 1 light source - Gold Leaf Elstead

The large Swirl is a wall light by Flambeau, distributed by Elstead Lighting. Its centrepiece is a spiral scroll cast in resin and finished in antiqued gold leaf: the gold is darker in the recesses and brighter on the raised ridges. The scroll sits on a round gilded back plate, with a rectangular cream linen shade above it.

Size and space on the wall

The fitting is 31.8 cm high and 22.9 cm wide, and it projects 15.2 cm from the wall. Compare that depth with the width of the passage where it will hang — in a narrow hallway or next to a door that opens towards the wall, it is the projection that decides whether the light gets in the way.

The fitting weighs 1.08 kg, or 2.2 kg boxed. The range also includes a small Swirl wall light 25.4 cm high, so on a narrow wall or when hanging several side by side it is worth comparing both sizes.

Light source and dimming

There is one E27 socket for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is supplied, so you choose the colour and brightness yourself — for living spaces most people pick 2700–3000 K, a warm, slightly yellowish light. The source is not built in, so it is replaced like any ordinary bulb.

The manufacturer rates the wall light as compatible with dimmable lamps. It has no dimmer of its own, so dimming needs a dimmer switch in the circuit and a bulb marked as dimmable.

Construction, installation and spare parts

The light is made of steel, cast resin and a linen shade. It is for indoor use only and is Class I, which means it must be connected to an earth conductor — worth checking before installation if the wiring is an older two-core circuit. Supply voltage is 220–240 V, 50 Hz.

The shade is available separately as spare part LS471, so a soiled or damaged shade does not mean replacing the whole fitting. The manufacturer intends Swirl for homes as well as hotels and restaurants. The same large wall light also comes in a Bone White finish.
