Mathus Small Outdoor Wall Lantern - 1 Light Source - Black Elstead

The small Mathus wall lantern from Kichler is built like the medium version — a rectangular cage of thick, clear glass with bevelled edges under a hipped roof — in shorter proportions. The black aluminium has a fine sand texture, so it does not shine.

Compact dimensions

The lantern is 33 cm high and 18.4 cm wide, and projects 21 cm from the wall; it weighs 2.7 kg. It is 12.7 cm shorter than the medium Mathus (45.7 cm), so it fits a shorter stretch of wall, for example between a door frame and a downpipe or beside a gate — measure the free space before you buy.

IP44 protects it from splashing water, and the manufacturer specifies outdoor mounting. It is a Class I fitting and is wired with an earth conductor.

Light source

Under the roof is an E27 socket for one bulb of up to 60 W; bulbs are bought separately. The glass is clear, so the bulb stays in view, and the thick bevelled panes break up its reflections along the edges. Dimming needs a dimmable bulb and a dimmer in the circuit.

A plain, unornamented form and solid glass — a classic lantern in a size that does not dominate the entrance.
