Collier is a medium semi-flush ceiling light by Hinkley, distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting. A round etched opal glass diffuser sits in a steel ring, held below the ceiling by a central stem and three angled rods that meet a round canopy. The steel carries the Black Oxide finish – an oxidised black with a graphite, slightly metallic tone.
Size and installation
The fitting is 55.9 cm across and 29.3 cm tall, so its lower edge sits just under 30 cm below the ceiling. Compare that figure with your own room height: a semi-flush light leaves more headroom than a pendant, yet holds the diffuser away from the ceiling so light also spreads sideways. A diameter of more than half a metre suits the middle of a room rather than a narrow corridor.
The light weighs 3 kg. It is protection class I, which means the ceiling box must provide an earth conductor. The manufacturer rates it for indoor use only.
Bulbs
Inside are four E14 lampholders for bulbs of up to 40 W each. Bulbs are not included, so you choose the colour and brightness yourself – E14 LED candle bulbs fit, for example. The fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs: if a wall dimmer is planned, buy bulbs marked as dimmable.
The etched opal glass is milky and opaque. The bulbs stay hidden, and light passes through the diffuser evenly spread, without bright spots.
Where it fits
The Collier line draws on mid-century silhouettes: a flat disc, slim rods and round knobs at the joints give a modernist shape with a retro note. The light is intended for bedrooms and dining rooms, where diffused ceiling light serves as general lighting. The same family includes a five-light Collier chandelier in the identical finish, so the two can be paired in adjoining rooms.
