Collier is a small Hinkley flush ceiling light distributed by Elstead Lighting: a white glass bowl set in a steel ring with a Black Oxide finish and small knobs around the rim. Black oxide is a chemically produced metal finish — dark with a faint metallic sheen, not a flat paint.
Size and mounting
The fitting is 34.6 cm in diameter and 12.4 cm high, so it stays close to the ceiling and suits places where a pendant would lower the ceiling or get in the way. Weigh the diameter against the size of the room if it is to be the only light there; within the Collier family this is the small version.
It weighs 2.5 kg and is for indoor use. It is a Class I fitting, so it must be connected to the protective earth conductor. It runs on 230 V mains.
Lamps and light
Inside are two E27 lampholders, each rated for up to 40 W. Lamps are not included — you need to buy two. The limit applies to a lamp's actual power, so E27 LED lamps equivalent to an old 60 W bulb, which typically draw 8–9 W, fit comfortably and together give around 1600 lm, enough for main room lighting.
The white glass bowl hides the lamps and spreads the light downwards. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps: to dim it you need lamps marked as dimmable and a dimmer. Light colour is chosen with the lamps — 2700–3000 K gives warm light, 4000 K neutral.
Style and intended rooms
Hinkley describes Collier as a mid-century silhouette in a simple, retro form that still reads as contemporary: a smooth bowl, a slim dark ring and small cast knobs. It is intended for bedrooms and dining rooms. The Collier family also includes a Heritage Brass version.
