Collier is a five-light chandelier by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting. Five lampholders stand upright on a steel ring, each inside a cylinder of clear seeded glass – glass with trapped air bubbles – and an off-white opal glass bowl hangs beneath the centre of the ring. The whole fitting hangs from four rods that meet at a hub under the chain, finished in Black Oxide.
Size and suspension
The chandelier is 68.5 cm in diameter and the fitting itself is 77.9 cm high. It comes with 304.8 cm of chain and the drop can be set between 93.2 and 204.6 cm – compare the lower figure with the height of your own room. Over a table the drop is usually set so that the bottom of the fitting sits 70–80 cm above the tabletop; compare the 68.5 cm diameter with the width of your table.
The fitting weighs 6.95 kg, so the ceiling fixing point has to carry that load. It is protection class I and is therefore connected with a protective earth conductor.
Light sources
Each of the five E27 lampholders takes a bulb of up to 40 W. No bulbs are included – you need to buy five. The glass cylinders are clear, so the bulbs stay on view and their shape becomes part of how the chandelier looks.
The fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs: dimming it needs a dimmer switch and five bulbs marked as dimmable.
Style and use
The silhouette looks back to the mid-twentieth century – a mid-century modern and retro style: a plain frame of rods and a ring, cast knobs and joints, and seeded glass. The manufacturer specifies it for interior use, and the catalogue places it over a dining table and in a hallway.
