NORLYS Modena 351A/BL outdoor pendant lantern, black, on a chain, E27, IP54

Modena 351A/BL is a classic NORLYS hanging lantern on a chain: the hexagonal body with clear panes is capped by a sloping roof with a ring for the chain and closed underneath by a turned ball finial. The cast-aluminium body and the steel chain are powder-coated black (RAL 9005).

Size and suspension

The lantern itself is 25 cm wide and 33 cm tall, and with the chain and canopy it hangs 105 cm below the ceiling. Subtract those 105 cm from the ceiling height of the porch or canopy to see how much headroom is left for people walking underneath.

The fitting hangs from a ceiling hook, and the canopy at the ceiling is 11 cm in diameter. The terminals take conductors up to 2 × 2.5 mm² in a round sheathed cable of 7–10.5 mm diameter. The lantern weighs 1.6 kg, or 2.25 kg packed.

Which bulb and how much light

Inside is a single E27 lampholder for an A55–A60 bulb no longer than 110 mm, LED up to 9 W. The bulb is not included and can be changed without a service call. An LED bulb of about 800 lm gives roughly the light of an old 60 W incandescent.

The panes are clear, so the bulb stays visible and becomes part of the lantern's look. Light leaves through the panes to the sides, while the roof shields it from above.

Build and where it goes

IP54 means protection against dust and splashing water from any direction. Protection class II is double insulation that needs no earth conductor. Panes of UV-stabilised polycarbonate yellow more slowly in sunlight than ordinary plastic, and if the diffuser is damaged the manufacturer supplies the 06380004 service kit rather than a whole new fitting.

The style is classic with a retro feel: the sloping roof, turned ball and chain recall old lanterns. The manufacturer intends the fitting for lighting gardens and terraces – it hangs under a terrace roof, and equally at the entrance of a hotel or restaurant.
