VAN GOGH LED L is a picture light from the Polish brand Nowodvorski – a slim black bar 89.5 cm long, carried on a bracket that holds it away from the wall.

The bracket, and why it stands 14 cm proud

The fitting does not sit against the wall: a rectangular bracket holds the bar 14 cm out from it. That is not styling but a working requirement. A picture light has to sit in front of the plane of the canvas and throw light down onto it at an angle – flush against the wall it would light mostly the top edge of the frame and cast that frame's shadow across the painting. Fourteen centimetres of projection gives even coverage of a picture roughly 60–90 cm tall.

Match the length to the picture

The L version is 89.5 cm and is meant for large formats – the rule of thumb is that the light should be about two thirds of the picture's width, so this bar suits canvases roughly 120–140 cm across. Nowodvorski makes the same lamp in M and S sizes for smaller works; on a gallery wall it is worth using several of one size.

Warm 3000 K and CRI 80

3000 K is warm white – the norm for display lighting at home, because it does not cool down warm pigments: ochres, reds, the gilding on a frame. Output is 650 lm at a maximum power of 18 W, and colour rendering is CRI ≥ 80. The 120° beam gives a wide, soft wash rather than a spot. Rated life of the source is 30,000 hours.

Mounting and supply

The light source is permanently built in and supplied – there are no lamps to buy. A mounting kit is also included. The fitting is protection class I, so it needs an earth conductor, and runs on 220–230 V, 50/60 Hz. Its IP20 rating places it in dry interiors. The body is painted aluminium with polycarbonate parts.
