NYC/RON 15/20 is a classic table lamp from the Czech studio RENDL: a cylindrical polycotton shade 15 cm across, carried on a slim nickel stem with a round base. The whole stands 40.5 cm tall and weighs under half a kilogram.

The size decides the use

40.5 cm is a height chosen for furniture, not for a room. Standing on a bedside cabinet, the lamp puts its shade roughly at the shoulder height of someone sitting up in bed — which is exactly where light falls on a book rather than into the eyes. On a hallway chest, a windowsill or a desk it does the same job: it lights a patch of the surface, not the whole room. The shade is only 15 cm across, so the lamp takes little space on a crowded top.

White fabric means light in every direction

A shade of pale polycotton behaves differently from a metal one: besides throwing light down and up through its open ends, it also lets light through its sides. The shade itself therefore glows softly and evenly, and the lamp reads as a warm point in the room rather than as a spotlight. That is a virtue in the evening, when mood is the point, and a drawback when concentrated light is needed for close work — for reading small print, a fitting with an opaque shade and a narrow beam serves better.

An E27 lamp — 15 W maximum, LED only

The manufacturer specifies the fitting for LED light sources with an E27 thread and states a limit of 15 W. That is a limit of the socket, not the power of the lamp, and a deliberately low one: a 15 cm fabric shade closes tightly around the bulb, so only a low-heat technology is permissible. Do not fit a halogen or filament bulb of comparable wattage. In practice 15 W of diode is a great deal for a table lamp — a typical choice here is 6–9 W. No bulb is included, so the colour temperature is yours to choose; warm suits white fabric and evening use best.

Operation and connection

The lamp has an in-line cord switch — a practical arrangement beside a bed, since there is no button on the body to hunt for in the dark. The cord measures 150 cm, enough for the usual spacing of sockets without an extension. The fitting runs directly on 230 V and needs no driver or transformer: fit a bulb, plug it in, and it works.

Colour versions

This particular piece is the white-with-nickel version (code R14056). RENDL makes the same model in other combinations of shade and base finish — among them black, grey and apricot, with chrome or nickel bases — so several lamps from the same family can be combined in one interior, keeping an identical form across different colours.
