Vanguard is a three-light pendant by Quoizel, sold through Elstead Lighting. The open steel frame forms a hexagon of flat, wide bands, with three candle-style lampholders standing inside it. The Old Black finish is a dark, uneven black with visible texture that reads as forged, aged metal.
Size and hanging height
The frame measures 40.6 cm across and 33.1 cm high, proportions that suit a table about 80–90 cm wide. The pendant hangs on rigid rods: two 15.2 cm rods and two 30.5 cm rods are supplied, and combining them sets the overall height anywhere from 35.3 to 130.6 cm. Over a table, the bottom of the frame usually sits 70–80 cm above the top.
For a low ceiling the fitting can be mounted without rods as a semi-flush ceiling light, a conversion the manufacturer provides for. It weighs 5.52 kg, so it needs a secure ceiling fixing; on a suspended ceiling it has to be screwed to the structure above. It is protection class I and must be connected to an earth conductor.
Lamps and light
The pendant has three E14 lampholders, each for a lamp of up to 40 W; no lamps are included. It is compatible with dimmable lamps, so with dimmable lamps and a dimmer the brightness can be adjusted. Elstead recommends clear Litec E14 LED candle lamps at 4 W, 400 lm and 3000 K, and three of them give 1200 lm of warm white light in total, clearly more than an old 60 W bulb.
The frame is open and the lamps stay on view, so the look of the pendant also depends on their shape: clear candles or lamps with a visible filament bring out the open construction.
Style and use
The rough metal texture, flat bands and candle holders give the pendant an industrial character. The manufacturer specifies it for indoor use, and it is listed for dining rooms and for hanging over a table.
