The small Cleveland is a pedestal lantern from Elstead Lighting's own range. A rounded shade of clear seeded glass with small air bubbles sits between vertical ribs, a domed roof with a turned finial crowns it, and the whole lantern stands on a fluted stem with a square plate at the bottom. The body is cast aluminium in Weathered Bronze — a patinated bronze, dark with copper highlights on the edges.
Size and mounting
The lantern is 46.6 cm high and 18.5 cm in diameter, and it weighs 1.05 kg. The square base plate has fixing holes, so the fitting is screwed down onto a flat surface — the top of a low wall, a gate pillar or a plinth beside steps. Compare the 18.5 cm diameter with the width of that surface before choosing the spot.
Outdoor use
IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, so the lantern can stand in the garden, by the driveway or at the front door, exposed to rain. Cast aluminium does not rust the way steel does. The fitting is protection class I, so it must be connected to an earth conductor — something for the electrician to note before installation.
Light source
Inside is one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W; no bulb is included. Despite the bubbles the glass is clear, so the bulb stays visible and its shape becomes part of the lantern's look. The fitting works with dimmable lamps: with a dimmer you need a bulb marked as dimmable.
The classical outline — the swelling shade, the finial and the fluted base — suits a garden by the house as well as the entrances of hotels and restaurants, where several lanterns on low walls can mark the way to the door.
